NSF-led Initiative on Big Data Regional Innovation Hubs
- NSF leads 10 Year initiative to enable
- Big Data Research (BIGDATA research program),
- Cyber-Infrastructure (DIBBs, CC-DNI),
- Education (NRT) and
- Partnerships (BD Hub)
- To build partnerships, BD Hub Initiative started
- Four National Regions – South, Northeast, Midwest, West
- Website for information sharing: www://bdhub.info
- Three phases of BD Hub Initiative within each Region
- Phase 1 – Build BD Hub Partnerships
- Phase 2 – Build BD Spokes
- Phase 3 – Build BD Nodes
- In Phase 1 funds available to build partnerships
- Funding in this phase has only funds to support cooperating mechanisms for creation of strong partnerships (executive director, staff person to organize meetings/workshops/webinars, to enable portal for document sharing, etc
In Phase 2 and 3 funds available to build the data sharing infrastructure along created spokes-node specific partnerships
Spoke and Node proposals in Phase 2 and Phase 3 will be funded by NSF, NIH, … (depending on the topic of the spoke, e.g., health-related spoke will go to NIH)
Spokes are regional themes (e.g., smart cities, transportation, food-water-energy)
Nodes are local themes within a spoke (e.g., Chicago smart city theme)
Midwest BD Hub Status
•Proposal due June 24, 2015
•Results from Midwest BD Hub Charrette:
•One proposal from Midwest Region
•Lead: UIUC, Co-leads: Iowa State, University of Michigan, of the proposal writing process in Midwest Region
•Goal 1 : broad participation in the proposal writing process
•Goal 2 : need for clear governance structure within BD Hub Midwest
