Agenda

Ian Taylor will be on the call and will talk about the NDS Dashboard, which will include a general discussion about the roles of the NDS Dashboard and the NDS Explorer to ensure we minimize overlap.

Notes

  • excellent demo and discussion of NDS Dashboard led by Ian Taylor
  • demo at www.ndspilot.com
    • running on Openstack cluster in the UK
    • php
    • Yii web framework
    • RDF
  • functionality
    • repository/find publications, attach papers, attach data, attach scripts
    • access to data in dropbox, scidrive, epiphyte
    • copies data into irods
    • plans for globus
    • running ad-hoc nds services
      • user picks prebuilt docker image
      • user picks input file
      • user picks script to run in container
      • "execute" consists of
        • launches docker container
        • makes data available to the container
        • executes the specified script
        • returns log output to user's web page
        • returns output files to user in a tar file
    • (editors note: these notes do not do it justice)
  • discussion
    • general discussion regarding approaches for running/accessing long-lived containers
      • google cloud (the approach of console via web page – not the vendor product)
      • novnc
    • approach to openstack resource management (creating instances, volumes, etc.)
      • NDS Dashboard does not do anything in that space
    • approach to docker container management (starting/stopping/managing nds services)
      • current implementation used by NDS Dashboard is ytwebapp/ythub_workers (same as the sc14 demo, I believe – if so, then tornado/rabbitmq/celery)
      • also built a second implementation based on Django – by Kiran(sp?) / Kacper) – located in nds-django repo in bitbucket
  • outcome
    • clear opportunities to collaborate and move forward together
    • will follow up with specific technical discussions regarding container management
      • the primary question is whether to continue to use the existing ytwebapp/ythubworkers or switch to the django-based implementation.
    • goals is for that discussion to happen by wed or fri next week
