Budget Information

Budget Templates

The PDO will create the official budget for the proposal, based on input from the research team. But templates are available to help researchers and relevant support staff create initial drafts and estimates.

    • Why use ours? Our templates include ISF and updated rates, which other templates may not.
    • If you share these budgets, please note in the file name that it is a draft or estimate to all recipients.
    • Remember: the PDO is responsible for the final NCSA budget that is submitted, even if the project as a whole is going through another unit.

If you need a more complex budget template, please reach out to the PDO (ncsa-pdo@mx.uillinois.edu).

Understanding F&A and ICR

Facilities and administration (F&A) charges on sponsored projects are a reimbursement from the sponsor to the campus for the cost of doing research.

Because colleges and units incur costs in supporting sponsored research, a portion of the reimbursement is distributed back to them (ICR).

See SPA's F&A FAQ for more

Understanding ISF

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) assesses a standard Infrastructure Support (ISF) to provide advanced technology services, and support computing infrastructure and networking services conducive to the needs of employees working in a high-performance computing environment that the NCSA facility provides. The established computer service rate at NCSA is $271.30* per month per employee.

All NCSA technical employees, faculty, students, as well as non-NCSA technical employees located within NCSA facilities, utilize and should be assessed for these NCSA ISF charges. These services include software and network services used to effectively support sponsored research projects. For this reason, ISF is assessed on all projects submitted through and managed by NCSA, regardless of a researcher’s home unit.
